The 5-Star Quest – Survival Mode: What Went Down

Posted on - March 13th 2026

When was the last time a webinar left you nodding along thinking “finally, someone said what everyone in the industry has been thinking?”

That’s exactly what happened when SCALE brought together three of the short-term rental industry’s most respected voices to tackle one of its most frustrating ongoing realities: the OTA review system.

Hailie Maarie (CMHBNB), Humphrey Bowles (Truvi), and Steve Taggert (My Getaways) joined moderator Damian Sheridan (SCALE) for 40 minutes of discussion on badge culture, review extortion, and what fairer platforms could actually look like.

The Conversation

The session opened with a simple but pointed observation: OTA review systems were built to build trust. Somewhere along the way, a 4.7 became a failing grade, anonymous reviews became impossible to challenge, and “give me a refund or I’ll leave a 1-star” became a recognisable host experience.

From there, the panel got into it. They broke down the 4.8 Superhost threshold and why the mathematics of a 5-star scale are more unforgiving than most guests realise. They talked through review extortion: what it looks like in practice, how platforms currently handle it (and where they fall short) and what documentation actually helps when you’re trying to dispute a review.

They went platform by platform across Airbnb, Booking.com and Vrbo, giving an honest read on what’s working and what isn’t for hosts operating across multiple channels.

And they didn’t shy away from the bigger question: what would a fairer system actually look like? Two-way accountability, meaningful dispute routes and review processes designed with hosts – not just guests – in mind.

It was, as promised, some uncomfortable truths. But also some genuinely practical takeaways.
